Getting to Bonaire: Your Complete Flight Guide

Introduction & Why It Matters

Getting to Bonaire might feel a little trickier than to some big tourist hubs—but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. This page is your one-stop guide for everything you need to know about flights, airlines, airports, entry requirements, tips, and planning. Whether you’re coming from North America, Europe, Latin America, or elsewhere, this is your roadmap to arriving on Bonaire smoothly.

Airports & Where You Land

Flamingo International Airport (BON)

  • Bonaire’s only commercial airport is Flamingo International Airport (BON), located just north of Kralendijk and only about 10 minutes from many of our rentals.

  • The airport handles international and regional flights. There are flights coming to Bonaire from Curaçao (Willemstad, CUR) or Aruba (AUA), or via major hubs like Amsterdam, Miami, New York, Atlanta, Newark, Houston and Santo Domingo.

  • Immigration, customs, baggage, and transport (taxis, shuttles) are all located just after arrivals.

Major Airlines & Typical Routes to Bonaire

Bonaire is easier to reach than many travelers realize — and in recent years, flight options have improved significantly. You’ll land at Flamingo International Airport (BON), just 10 minutes from most accommodations on the island, including many of our vacation rentals.

Direct Flights from North America

Several major airlines now offer nonstop service to Bonaire from key U.S. cities, especially during high season (typically December – April, with some routes continuing year-round):

  • Atlanta (ATL) – Direct flights with Delta Air Lines

  • Miami (MIA) – Direct flights with American Airlines

  • New York (JFK) – Direct flights with JetBlue Airways

  • Houston (IAH) – Direct flights with United Airlines

  • Newark (EWR) – Direct flights with United Airlines

These direct routes make Bonaire more accessible than ever — many travelers from across the U.S. and Canada now choose to connect through one of these airports rather than via another Caribbean island.

Direct Flights from Europe

Travelers from Europe have a convenient option too:

  • Amsterdam (AMS) – Daily direct flights with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines connect the Netherlands to Bonaire in roughly 10–11 hours.

From other European cities, the easiest route is often to connect in Amsterdam, then fly direct to Bonaire.

Entry, Visa & Immigration Tips

  • Citizens of many countries (including the U.S., EU, Canada) can enter Bonaire as visitors (tourist visa waiver) — but always double-check current visa rules for your nationality.

  • When booking, ensure your passport has at least 6 months’ validity beyond your travel date.

  • Some flights/routes may require exit or transit visas depending on where you pass through—verify with airlines.

  • Be ready for standard immigration: arrival card, customs, possibly a health screening (depending on regulations).

Mandatory Tourist Entry Tax (Visitors Tax)

Since July 1, 2022, Bonaire requires all visitors to pay a Tourist Entry Tax before or upon arrival. This tax supports local infrastructure, nature conservation, and community services on the island.

  • The fee is currently $75 per visitor aged 13 and older, and $10 for children aged 2–12.

  • It is per visit, not per day.

  • You can pay online before your trip via the official site: www.bonaireisland.com — this is strongly recommended to save time on arrival.

  • After paying, you’ll receive a confirmation email and QR code, which you should have ready (printed or on your phone) for immigration officers when you land.

💡 Tip: Paying online before you travel is the easiest option. It speeds up your entry process and ensures you’re fully prepared before boarding your flight.

From Airport to Your Vacation Home

  • Once you land at Flamingo International, taxis, shuttles, or private transfers are available, let us know when you make your reservation and we will help you with a transfer or car rental.

  • Travel time to many Sunrentals properties is often short (10–20 minutes)

Travel-Day Recommendations

  • Arrive at your departure airport early (especially for international legs)

  • Keep essentials in carry-on: passport, itinerary, medications, chargers

  • If transit involves overnight, check visa or lodging rules in transit country

  • Stay hydrated, rest when possible, and avoid tight connecting windows if possible
